Putting the pinhead in O-pin-ionThe Leaf Chronicle -- "Your Connection to Clarksville, Tenn." -- may not ever win a Pulitzer Prize, but it can claim a special sort of distinction ever. The Leaf published what may be the most idiotic letter to the editor I have ever seen (and bear in mind, I spent several years as a small-town newspaper editor myself). Now, as regular readers of this site know, I've spent some time analyzing some of the consequences of the current situation in Iraq (click to read in PDF format). However, no amount of time spent analyzing could possibly lead me where this letter writer goes:I'm no foreign policy expert, and no one would pay me good money for my opinion, so I feel comfortable in joining the crew who writes in to this paper concerning such matters.
I see us in a win-win situation in Iraq. At best, Iraq will pull together as a fledgling democracy. At worst, it will devolve into civil war between Shiites and the Sunnis, Saddam Hussein's favored class who want to regain control over the Shiites and their oil. But even if the worst transpires, i.e. civil war, would it be a disaster for the United States and our ally in the region, Israel? I think not.
First of all, Iran would jump in to protect their fellow Shiites. Next, Syria, al-Qaida and perhaps Jordan and Saudi Arabia would back the Iraqi Sunnis.
With these two Islamic sects fighting each other, we would need to step in and protect the oil facilities.
After cessation of hostilities, we would hand over oil rights to whoever was left standing, contingent on their adherence to democracy and human rights. Who in history said "divide and conquer"?
By the way, if Osama bin Laden is hiding in Iran, how long before he is taken out and stoned, with his buddy al-Zarqawi, stump and all, lopping off Shiites' heads over the Internet? I tried to tell myself this guy was being ironic. Certainly, he seemed to be shooting for a certain kind of grisly whimsey. But I just couldn't sell myself in the end. I think the man is sincere, God help us. But then God got us into this thing in the first place.
