We've Done So Much For ThemAh, democracy. Remember how we liberated the women of Afghanistan and brought the shining beacon of freedom to an oppressed people? Here's what they are doing with their newfound principles:Senior Muslim clerics are demanding that an Afghan man on trial for converting from Islam to Christianity be executed, warning that if the government caves in to Western pressure and frees him, they will incite people to "pull him into pieces."
In an unusual move, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice telephoned President Hamid Karzai on Thursday seeking a "favorable resolution" of the case of Abdul Rahman. The 41-year-old former medical aid worker faces the death penalty under Afghanistan's Islamic laws for becoming a Christian. See? Just wait until the domino effect kicks in and the whole Middle East follows the Bush blueprint for democratic government. Things will be so much better then. You know, if we hadn't gone off adventuring in Iraq, it's remotely possible that we could have guided the Afghanis to a more enlightened Western culture. But I wouldn't bet the rent on it. It would have been much better if we had called a spade a spade -- and based our actions in Afghanistan (and Iraq for that matter) on cold hard pragmatism. When we try to force feed our cultural mores to people who don't want them, well, this is exactly the kind of situation that results. And just keep an eye on Egypt and Pakistan if you want to see some more travesties in the name of the Bush doctrine... Coming soon to a theater of operations near you.
