LOST: Maternity LeaveSome of you have been following my thread/evolving theory on LOST-TV titled Remembrance of Things Past, which proposes that the flashbacks on LOST are not simply a narrative device, but are somehow integrated as part of the plot. Last night's episode, Maternity Leave, provided some grist for this mill.
The episode focused on Claire's muddled flashbacks of her amnesiac time with Ethan. Stylistically, the flashbacks differed from the usual LOST format, so we can't draw any solid conclusions from what transpired, but one scene in particular struck me -- the segment in which Claire remembered sitting on a log with Ethan. During the flashback, the camera panned back to reveal Claire -- the "present tense" Claire -- watching herself in the flashback.
In the flashback, the weather was sunny. In the "present," rain was falling and it was dark. This highlighted the disconnect -- and also emphasized the fact that Claire's loci during the scene was in the past -- not the present -- since she was dry during the shot.
I believe this is just the beginning. I think we'll see more examples of the "present" impinging on the flashbacks, with clearer examples to come. A little bit of foreshadowing -- carefully obsfuscated by the broken format, but with implications about the true mysteries of LOST. If you're still fixated on the Dharma Initiative, you might be missing the real story.
