Unlocking 9/11

I've posted the beginning of a new series on INTELWIRE. Unlocking 9/11 is yet another project tracing the history of the September 11 attacks, but the thrust of this one is to unfold a few aspects that have been neglected until now.

First, the series will attempt to correct the record on some key incidents that have been widely misreported or dramatically misinterpretet. Second, there will be some investigative scoops, material that hasn't ever been reported before, with significant ramifications for our understanding of what went before.

That will include substantial new information about:

1) The terrorist infrastructure in the United States before 9/11, who implemented it and how many elements of the plot were visible to investigators and intelligence offices before the attacks actually took place.

2) How specific problems with terrorist informants hampered the ability of the U.S. to process the intelligence it had already gathered on al Qaeda.

3) How policy decisions relating to the civil war in Bosnia had a direct impact on terrorism investigations in the U.S., specifically obstructing the investigation and arrest of several dangerous terrorist operates and obscuring links between the World Trade Center bombing and al Qaeda.

The series will probably also get into some aspects of the Oklahoma City bombing. My strong inclination would be to keep that controversial subject as a separate investigation, but there are some points of overlap that can't easily be separated -- as you will see.

The series overview is here.

The first story -- Who Called the Shots in the 1993 World Trade Center Bombing? -- in the series is here.

The series will be compiled into a book at a later date.
