New LOST Theory: FBs are SmokeyvisionI've written before about the idea that the flashbacks on ABC's Lost are not just a narrative device, but also a clue about the Island's mysteries.
For instance, they might be a sign that the characters suffer from temporal lobe epilepsy (a theory which got a nice nod on my beloved, but abandoned, show Day Break).
Here's a new proposal -- the Flashbacks are what the Smoke Monster sees when it's poking around in our characters' brains.
Everything in the FBs represents something that was seen or experienced by someone on the Island -- even when the POV has been violated during the episode. Recently, for instance, we saw Ben's birth. While he wouldn't remember (even subconsciously) what was going on outside his mother's womb at the time, his father Roger Work Man was there, and he later went to the Island.
The only other POV violation I can recall occurred Kate's flashback in "I Do," when we saw The Marshal on the other end of a phone conversation with Ms. Austen. However, the Marshal also ended up on the Island -- and therefore his POV is fair game for Smokey.
None of the FBs or past-time sequences thus far have depicted an event that was imperceptible to someone already on the Island. Is the whooshing sound of a flashback beginning actually the sound of Smokey diving into a character's brain? Stay tuned.
